Jonathan Soto
Recruiter
Can you tell us a bit about your background and how you got into recruitment?
I grew up in a small town in Texas named Victoria. I spent 1 year in college playing baseball and then moved into a blue collar background, working jobs in warehouses and in the oil field. From the Frac side, to production, and working on workover rigs as a Floor and Derrik hand. I got into recruiting after successfully completing a contract assignment for a staffing agency in a warehouse environment. My recruiter liked my people skills and at the time needed another recruiter, asked if I would be interested.
What do you enjoy most about working in recruitment?
I enjoy connecting people with opportunities that make a positive impact on their lives.
Can you share a memorable success story from your time as a recruiter?
I had a candidate that had never created a resume before and was going through some tough times. He was very frustrated and, in a funk, that he did not meet a lot of different job requirements due to his background, but I took the time to help him and ended up getting him hired on with a client. He broke down crying saying how thankful he was because he was now 1 step closer to getting his child back. Fast forward 8 months later he texted me saying he was successful in regaining custody of his child.
What qualities do you look for in candidates when filling a position?
Relevant skills and experience, strong work ethic, positive attitude, and excellent communication skills.
How do you build relationships with candidates and clients?
As far as the candidates go I try to be attentive and listen actively, be personable and build rapport by at times focusing on the candidate not just the job, be transparent and honest with them upfront about the job and the hiring process, and by sharing feedback on their performance in interviews to help them improve and grow. With clients I try my best to take the time to learn about their business, specific hiring needs, be responsive and communicative along with transparent about things like challenges.
What challenges have you faced in recruitment, and how have you overcome them?
The rising costs of recruiting tools. We are still working on fully overcoming this problem but have seen positive strides within our team work to overcome this issue and find valuable candidates.
How do you stay updated on industry trends and best practices in recruitment?
I try to utilize online resources like social media, vlogs and blogs, online communities, and data analysis.
What advice would you give to someone looking to get into the recruitment field?
Develop your people skills and be a good listener, try to get to know your specific industry you are working in by learning things like terminology and processes, learn to use recruitment tools, and be patient and persistent. Understanding recruitment can be a long and frustrating process but do not get discouraged and keep pushing forward. Always be ethical and professional. And lastly network.
Can you describe your approach to creating a positive candidate experience?
First by creating a clear and engaging job posting, Prompt acknowledgement, Transparent and personalized communication, trying to make the submittal/hiring process as smooth and easy as possible.
What are your goals for the future in your recruitment career?
To have a positive impact on as many people's lives as possible. Helping my team and candidates grow, becoming more successful and increasing my placement numbers.
